Lone Star Dispatch Issue #4

Story 1 - Yo-yo'ing swings to new heights

This is an article about Senior Matthew Lane and his yo-yo skills. He has been practicing yo-yo'ing since 7th grade, when it was still a fad, and he was the only one who stuck with it. Senior Jesse Fowler says that it was confusing to see Matthew initially making fun of yo-yo'ers, and suddenly become extremely impressive with the toy he used to diss.

Story 2 - Women's rights are human rights

This article is about the Women's March at the capitol which was held in Austin, Texas the day after the inauguration. Sophomore Bella Lufschanowski says she is impressed with how many people showed up to participate at the march. Lead organizer Melissa Fiero says "I think it sent the message, loud and clear, and we will not allow our rights to be diminished."

Story 3 - "Super Mario Run": Game's purple coins not enough

This article centers around the newest Nintendo game from the Super Mario franchise for the app store, and the profit controversy behind it. The title of the article plays on the concept of purple coins being the highest form of currency in the game. The article talks about how even though the game has been met with good reviews, the sales are incredibly sub-par.

Photo 1 - Critique

This photo focuses on a science fair judge critiquing a student's science project. The stern look in the judges eyes shows that he's giving the student some useful advice.

Photo 2 - Training to Be the Best

Senior Dawson Warnken lifts weights in the weight room for more strength. The black/white filter adds emotion and personality. Pair it up with the determination in Warnken's eyes, and you get a very ambitious photograph.

Photo 3 - Focusing On The Yo-Yo

This photo expresses Matthew Lane's yo-yo skills with an artistic twist. The black/white filter adds a lot of atmosphere to the photograph as the yo-yo gracefully flies above Lane's head.

Photo 4 - On the Beam

This picture is all about motion, showing Sophomore Kate Stubbs doing a back handspring on a balance beam. Another individual observes her skills in complete awe.

Photo 5 - Love Is Love

Two women share a kiss at the women's march, holding a sign saying "We Will Not Be Silenced". It is a representation of the LGBTQIA community.

My favorite photograph is probably Focusing On The Yo-Yo
Least favorite has gotta be Hard At Work. Susan Leos is a great staff member, but the picture simply doesn't do a good job at representing her. It doesn't even look like it was planned out.
If I was part of the photography staff, I would've loved to participate in the women's march photography.
Overall, I'm giving this photography a 9/10.

Front Pages of the World

1.
This was my favorite front page because of the eye-grabbing photograph.
2. "Pipeline Protesters Are Evicted From Main Camp in North Dakota", because I am familiar with the event.
3. If you include all of the short stories in the "What's News" section on the side, 28 stories.
4. There is usually one big photo in the middle, previews of articles inside the paper, a large headline towards the top, and the name of the publisher company at the very top.
5. They will always need something entirely new, different, and refreshing to grab people's attention.

Website Review

Hi, everyone. Charlie F. here, the internet's SECOND busiest user. And it's time for a review of a website which was recommended by my photojournalism class. She sent out a page titled "7 Photography Websites Every Shutterbug Should Keep a Click Away". Out of the 7, I chose a the Tumblr blog of a user or group of users known as Photojojo ♥. The main point of the blog is to provide tips about photography while simultaneously showing off their own photography. Their most recent post involved tips on how to take good kiss photos on Valentine's Day while preserving the love and making it look real and natural. It's a very, very casual blog. The only issue I can find is that because it's a Tumblr blog, it's a little bit unorganized. If the photos and tutorials were in different categories, it would make the blog a lot easier to navigate. Here, your average user can learn simple tips and tricks on how to take good photos. Would I add it to my bookmarks? Eh... I don't know. I'll look into it more in my own time. I would definitely recommend this site to any aspiring photographers out there looking for a place to learn tips. I'm feeling a strong 7/10 to a light 8/10 on this website. It could use some work, but the direction it's going in so far definitely lets me know that with a few changes, it could become one of the most popular photography blogs ever.
